# What is an AI trainer?

**An AI trainer improves an AI model by example.** They write prompts and ideal answers, rate and rank the answers a chatbot gives, and write short reasons explaining what is right or wrong. The people who build the model use those judgements to train and test the next version.

This is the work I do. Below is what it actually involves, the names it goes by, and why language and psychology skills matter in it.

## What does an AI trainer do?

1. **Rates answers.** Scores one answer against a rubric: is it accurate, does it follow the instructions, is it clear, is the tone right, is it safe.
2. **Ranks answers side by side.** Compares two or more answers to the same prompt and says which is better, and why.
3. **Writes prompts.** Writes realistic questions and tasks, including hard and tricky ones, to see where the model fails.
4. **Writes ideal answers.** Writes the answer the model should have given, as a reference.
5. **Explains every judgement.** A short, specific reason that points to the exact problem, so it can be fixed.
6. **Checks safety.** Flags answers that could harm someone, especially on health, crisis and other sensitive topics.

I explain how I score answers, step by step, in [how to evaluate AI responses](https://muskanrashid.com/how-to-evaluate-ai-responses).

## The job titles you'll see

| Title | What it usually means |
| --- | --- |
| AI trainer | The general name: prompts, ratings, rankings and reference answers |
| AI response evaluator / AI rater | Mostly rating and ranking answers against guidelines |
| LLM evaluator | The same work, named after large language models |
| RLHF specialist | Preference ratings used for reinforcement learning from human feedback |
| Language specialist (e.g. Urdu) | Judging how well the model reads and writes one language |
| Subject expert AI trainer (e.g. psychology) | Judging answers in one field, where expertise is needed to spot errors |

## What an Urdu AI trainer (Urdu language specialist) checks

Models that are good in English can still write Urdu that is wrong or unnatural. Things a native speaker catches:

- Answering in the script the user asked for: Urdu script or Roman Urdu
- Natural Urdu, not a word-for-word translation from English
- The right level of respect (aap, tum) for the situation
- Verb gender agreement, which models often get wrong for the speaker or the listener
- Urdu–English code-switching that sounds like real people, not a mix that nobody speaks
- Pakistani usage and context, not only what fits other Urdu or Hindi-speaking regions

## Psychology AI trainers: why psychology helps

People bring stress, grief, trauma and crisis to chatbots. Judging those answers needs more than good grammar: does the answer stay safe, avoid diagnosing, show real empathy without agreeing with something harmful, and point to proper help when it is needed? My training in clinical psychology, psychopathology and crisis intervention is what I use for these checks.

## What skills does an AI trainer need?

- Reading carefully and following long, detailed guidelines exactly
- Checking facts against sources instead of trusting a confident tone
- Scoring the same way every time against fixed criteria
- Clear, short written English feedback
- Native-level knowledge of a language or a field

## How people get into this work

Most AI training is remote contract work through AI-training platforms and expert networks, which test applicants before giving them projects. Good preparation is free: Google's [Search Quality Rater Guidelines](https://guidelines.raterhub.com/searchqualityevaluatorguidelines.pdf) teach the way of thinking these tests check, and comparing two chatbots' answers to the same question every day builds the habit.

## What I bring

- Wrote and refined the prompts a live AI app ([Sitey](https://app.sitey.pk)) uses, tested its answers and reported weak, wrong or unhelpful ones
- Native Urdu, professional English, fluent Punjabi
- MS Clinical Psychology (final semester, SZABIST) and BS Applied Psychology (Riphah)
- [Published researcher](https://muskanrashid.com/research): fact-checking, research methods, SPSS
- Psychometric scoring against fixed manuals from a hospital psychology internship

## Questions

### What is an AI trainer?

An AI trainer is a person who improves an AI model by example. They write prompts and ideal answers, rate and rank the answers a model gives, and write short reasons explaining what is right or wrong. Model makers use those judgements to train and test the next version.

### Is an AI trainer the same as an AI response evaluator?

Mostly, yes. Job boards use many names for the same core work: AI trainer, AI response evaluator, AI rater, LLM evaluator and RLHF specialist. Language roles add the language (for example Urdu language specialist), and expert roles add the subject (for example psychology AI trainer).

### What does RLHF mean?

RLHF stands for reinforcement learning from human feedback. People compare a model's answers and say which is better; those preferences are used to train the model to give answers people prefer. Much AI trainer work produces this kind of feedback.

### Do you need to code to be an AI trainer?

No, not for most of it. Coding roles exist, but most of the work is careful reading, following detailed guidelines, checking facts and writing clear feedback. Language and subject knowledge matter more than programming.
